Synopsis
Perhaps we can see Meek’s Cutoff as a simple western that was stripped to the bone: a series of typical characters yet with no intention of restoring the genre’s inherent narrative features. I’d rather recommend a different perspective: let’s consider Kelly Reichardt’s film (again written by Jon Raymond) as a period piece. As a film that deals with History through its seemingly insignificant details, even when the material could have led to an epic story: the hyperbolic gives way to everyday elements. Inspired by a true story, half way between Wagon Master (John Ford) and Nanook (Robert J. Flaherty), Reichardt and Raymond reconstruct the itinerary of a group of settlers who feel they were conned by an explorer (Stephen Meek) in Oregon in 1845. They wander through a deserted and solitary landscape in search of their destiny, but mostly trying desperately to find water. After Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch), this might be the only possible –and believable– western.
