Synopsis
A reflection on the fate of comrades who were once connected by the same ideological struggle and now remain close friends, We Were Communists is an uninhibited examination of the legacy from Lebanon's civil war and its post-war present. Four men recount stories from the battlefield, their broken dreams, and their eventual disillusionment in light of the country's current crisis. With a cinematographic intelligence that reinforces its overwhelming, incisive, and yet warm historical dimension, Maher Abi Samra’s first full-length documentary goes through a country’s recent history to trace a possible map of its deepest reality. Against the growing control of political discourse in his country, We Were Communists manages not just to face that sort of reactionary attack the present stages against other time periods, but also poses a series of questions that are as difficult as liberating.
