Synopsis
The new documentary by Austrian collective Klub Zwei (the visual artists couple formed by Simone Bader and Jo Schmeiser) kicks off with a question of devastating simplicity: how does one deal with a Nazi past in the family? What’s the line that separates the remembrance of a father or a mother from the ghost of a person who was involved in the Holocaust? The women interviewed by KZ face that without falling in the easy path of blood line or politically correct statements in line with official political discourse. Aware they are prioritizing doubt before dishonesty, and true record before over stylization, both the interviewers and the interviewees compose a hugely small and delicate document that gains density and tenacity as it goes through the testimonies and Vienna’s public spaces, and captures as well the evolution of post war urbanism. From this multiple and overlapped narrative logic, Love History proves that a good documentary knows it has to pay attention to tiny things in order to understand huge processes.
