Synopsis
¡Finally! After all the comings and goings that preceded the discovery of the (practically) original version of Metropolis –documented in detail in a book by Fernando Martín Peña as well as in the documentary Metropolis Refound, screened in last year’s edition– Fritz Lang’s masterpiece lands again in Buenos Aires, on a 35mm print restored by the Murnau Foundation (in collaboration with the Berlin Film Museum and the Pablo C. Ducrós Hicken Film Museum). With thirty additional minutes, the current cut of 147 minutes fixes the series of mutilations the film suffered right after its release in 1927. It brings back the complexity of the original narrative structure written by Thea Von Harbou (who was Lang’s wife back then), which integrated melodrama into a plot about the power struggle within an impressive Expressionist universe.
