Synopsis
While looking for archive footage for his recent documentary about Billy Paul, filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson found a real treasure in the basements of Swedish television: a bunch of cans with 16mm interviews from the time of the civil rights struggle in the US. Sweden had covered the events with a special interest and sympathy for the cause (the Scandinavian crown had made donations to Martin Luther King’s campaign) and its correspondents not only talked to the most radical leaders but also recorded –with foreign ingenuity– the everyday life of the ghetto. Olsson shows it all in a chronological order: a collage of practically unseen footage of Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, and a long etcetera. Some survivors from that time, like Harry Belafonte, provide retrospective comments together with current exponents of African-American culture like Erykah Badu or Questlove, who wrote the film’s original score.
