Synopsis
On his first film Shorei X (Bafici ‘09), Kôki followed in exasperating detail the home life of a young woman who took care of her schizophrenic mother. Now, it’s a typical three-part family (father, mother, and son) living in a quiet Tokio neighbourhood. But that same minimalist observation now reveals and senses the holes that exist beneath the surface of suburban normality. The father works in an office and quietly deals with his own obsolescence; the mother, a housewife, tries to find the illusion of her non-existing happiness in tidiness and good manners; the son is tired and bored with his family, so he changes his schedule and takes on any job that would give him a feeling of independence. The three live in the same house, but they hardly see or speak to each other. A supporter of the narrative iceberg theory, Kôki created detailed biographies for his characters –based on his previous experience as a pollster– and then left them out of the story, as an invisible base for the actors and the cameras to work over, something they refer to but never actually explain. There’s no need, actually.
