Synopsis
The trip the unemployed professor from the title makes from downtown Dominican Republic to the wildest corners of its tropic desolation feels like the one taken by a snail, or some other tiny creature living in a human-scale world: it’s slow, but also unyielding. No matter how many resumes he submits in offices down at the business district, or how much money he borrows, civilization seems set on throwing Jean far away, determined to get him out and leave him on the expeditious island nature. And that’s where this story somehow begins: in the passage from gray to green, right there when Jean decides to burn all of his documents and diplomas in order to get warm in the middle of the jungle, as if he was fulfilling a destiny that was written a long time ago. One that will end up getting him closer to a kind of human experience that only comes to the surface in the most rough outdoors, when reason gets sharpened and one’s very own existence matters less and less.
