Synopsis

Hyper-Active, ultra-violent, super excessive Miike seems to have drop several prefixes on his way to make this film. And that way is the samurai way; but before you imagine things –and if there’s something we learned from Miike is that we can imagine anything– we have to say 13 Assassins is not trying to parody classic samurai films or give it a twist. No. This is a samurai film by the book, with single-faced characters, proper crepuscular tones, and even more historical rigor than many others, as we can see from the detailed suicide ritual in the beginning. Based on the homonymous film of 1963, Miike patiently unfolds his view of the Shogun regime’s decadence (in the mid 19th century) focusing on the sadist feud lord Naritsugu and the team of warriors led by legendary Shinzaemon, who is on a mission to assassinate him. The final battle features 45 minutes (!) of action, tension, severed human flesh, missed sword strokes, mud, and blood: the most virtuous proof that Miike can still surprise us.
