Alfredo Espinoza

Born in Valparaíso, Chile, in 1942, Alfredo Espinoza is considered a legend of the traditional jazz: he is one of the best current alto sax players and has delighted many an audience throughout South America and the world with his usual simplicity.

Being still very young he and his family emigrated to Buenos Aires, where he took his first steps with the clarinet and the sax, back in the sixties. Still under age, his innate talent led him to become, simultaneously, a member of different dixie music bands of the city: Dixie Sincopators, St. Louis Stompers and Kansas City Stompers. An unexpected performance with the latter found him without his clarinet and thus he was asked to play an alto saxophone. It took him only thirty minutes to understand and master the clarinet’s fingering transcriptions. That night he performed with real mastery. It was the beginning of a fruitful career as an alto sax soloist.

As such, he performed with Antigua Jazz Band and Porteña Jazz Band of Buenos Aires, and other formations in Europe. Nowadays, he is a member of various bands in Chile like la Retaguardia Jazz Band and the one conducted by the remarkable and legendary pianist Giovanni. Espinoza is, undoubtedly, the most creative of the Chilean jazz soloists.
