Paolo Fresu

Biography

Trumpeter Paolo Fresu was born in Italy in 1961. His professional career started in 1982, recording for the RAI, with direction by Bruno Tommaso. He graduated in trumpet from the Caligari Conservatory in 1984, and since that year, he has constantly participated in a wide range of musical projects. He has played and recorded with the most prominent figures of Italian, European and American jazz. Since 1983, he has performed with the Quartetto Palatino, completed by Glenn Ferris, Aldo Romano and Michel Benita; the Mythscape Quartet, together with Swedish pianist Jon Balke; and the Rava quintet, among many others. He has appeared on over 300 recordings of various genres – including ethnic, contemporary and traditional music – and has won numerous awards (Django d’Or in France and Italy, among others). He is the artistic director of the Festival Time in Jazz in his hometown of Berchidda, of the Bergamo Jazz and the Jazz Seminars in Nuoro and of the Festival Jazz a Nuoro. In 1994, he created Eurojazz, a European contest for young musicians held in Oristano. He participates in a variety of multimedia projects with actors, dancers, painters, sculptors and poets. He has written music for documentaries, ballet and theater. His collaborations include the Leo Ferré project directed by pianist Roberto Cipelli. Also, he performs with his quartet Angel, completed by Nguyên Lê, Furio Di Castri and Roberto Gatto. He will present his new album recently released in Argentina.
