Biography

Double bass player Ugonna Okegwo was born in London in 1962. Raised in Germany, he moved to Berlin in 1986 and studied with Jay Oliver and pianist Walter Norris. Mingus’s trombonist Lou Blackburn took him on tour with his Afro-jazz band, Mombasa. In 1989, he became involved with Manhattan’s music scene. He has played with Kenny Barron, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jon Hendricks, Mingus Dynasty, Mingus Band and Brad Mehldau. His trio with Jacky Terrason and drummer Leon Parker performed at the Village Gate and Bradley’s. In 2002, Okegwo went on tour with his quartet and recorded UOniverse (Satchmo Jazz).
