Contest (evaluation criteria)

1. Salon Tango (unrestricted entry, amateurs and professionals)

The Couple, once formed, may not be separated while the music plays. This means that they may not be break the embrace, considered as the tango dance position.

For the position to be considered correct, the body of one of the members of the couple must be contained all the time by the arm of the other member. It is understood that, in certain figures, this may be flexible; but not throughout the duration of the dance.

All movements must be made within the space allowed by the embrace between the members of the couple.

The Jury will take into account the couple’s musicality and walking style as fundamental to the score.

Within these observation parameters, the couple may carry out all the popular figures, including barridas (sweeps), sacadas al piso (drawn to the floor), enrosques (twists), etc.

All other figures typical of stage tango such as ganchos (hooks), saltos (jumps) and trepadas (climbs) are completely excluded.

Couples, as in a dance hall, must constantly move counterclockwise, and may not stay in the same point of the choreographic space as this would obstruct the movement of the other dancers in the dance floor.

None of the members of the couple may lift his/her legs beyond the line of the knees.

2. Stage Tango (unrestricted entry, amateurs and professionals)

Participants will be able to express their view of the tango dance. This means that couples will be allowed to use movements, figures and applications not related to the traditional tango dance. However, the choreography must include traditional figures of Tango such as: eights, long walks, boleas, hooks, and the “milonguero embrace”. Couples will be able to break the embrace and use techniques from other dance disciplines, provided they are justified and benefit the performance of the interpreter.

Aerial tricks and other movements from other disciplines must not be excessive. This means that they must not exceed the third part of the performance. The couple must have floor movement sequences throughout the whole stage floor.

Prizes

Each category of the Dance World Cup will have a winning couple. The prize for the first place in each category will be TWENTY THOUSAND pesos ($20,000). The second and third places will also have prizes and special mentions. All contestants will obtain a Dance World Cup participation certificate.

The entry and subsequent registration of each couple implies the knowledge and acceptance of these rules by the each one of the participants of the Dance World Cup.

In case of controversy in the interpretation or implementation of these rules, the participants and the Management agree to be subjected to the jurisdiction of the Administrative Litigation and Tax Court of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The parties hereby expressly renounce to any other venue or jurisdiction that may be applicable for any reason. FINAL

The last stage of the competition, in the Stage Tango category, confronts the most prominent couples in a highly emotive definition. It will be carried out on August 31st. What better framework than a tango-dance encounter in the Luna Park to pay tribute to María Nieves, the sublime dancer that almost six decades ago, in that mythical scenario and next to Juan Carlos Copes, won the ovation and a title of champion that never expired? With her exquisite style, born in the dance floor and developed for the stage with a unique talent, Nieves embodies the fifth essence of tango-dance. Together with Juan Carlos Copes she was part of the couple who served as a model and inspiration to several generations of dancers. In 1983 she shone among the protagonists of the legendary show by Claudio Segovia and Hector Orezzoli: Tango Argentino. As one of the most beloved artists of the media, her colleagues and fans will pay her tribute on a special night. On the same stage, the evening culminates with a show that brings together two remarkable artists of international projection: Susana Rinaldi and Osvaldo Piro.

Tickets will be available for collection at Casa de la Cultura (Av. De Mayo 575), Downtown on Monday 16, from 11AM to 7PM. For the semifinals and finals, there is a limit of two tickets per person for one semifinal, and two tickets for one final.
