Synopsis

“If Hitler is dehumanized and shown only as a devil, any future Hitler may not be recognized, simply because he is a human being”. Since it follows such a simple and rational premise, it is hard to believe that Philippe Mora’s documentary generated so much reaction at the time of its Cannes premiere. But yes, the people’s reaction to the unseen footage of a humanized Hitler –a recreational, idle, and colored one– was such a scandal that his director remembers the screening had to be interrupted after several shouts and a chair thrown to the screen. Almost forty years later, and even when the recurrent images of Hitler and Eva Braun at their Alps home still haven’t lost their infuriating aspect, Swastika remains as an intact compilation film that not only exposed the rise and fall of Nazism through everyday footage, but also anticipated the future of the documentary genre.
