NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

FINAL FIGURES FOR A GREAT FESTIVAL 23 April 2012

CIFRAS FINALES DE UN GRAN FESTIVAL

The final numbers reveal a turnout increase and the consolidation of the Festival as a major event in the Buenos Aires City’s rich year-long cultural calendar. In total, 350 thousand people participated in the fourteenth edition of BAFICI, which represents a 15 percent increase over the 2011 edition. The number of tickets sold amounts to 230 thousand, which also confirms the attractiveness of such a comprehensive showcase of risk-taking, ground-breaking cinema, hardly available in the commercial circuit of this well-known film-loving city.

THE EARTH AND THE MOON 22 April 2012

LA TIERRA Y LA LUNA

In 2007, a sound engineer and a cameraman arrived in Corvo, the smallest island in the Azores archipelago, right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The village of 440 inhabitants gave their welcome to the small filming crew, who got to gradually meet the 500-year-old civilization, whose history is hardly discernible as it has almost no written records. This is the main focus of E na Terra nao e na Lua, by Portuguese director Gonçalo Tocha, to be screened today, on the Festival’s last day. Tickets are available for purchase at the Festival’s ticket outlets and on this website.

PAINT YOUR VILLAGE 22 April 2012

PINTA TU ALDEA

In this film the small French town of Saint-Marcellin, in the region of Isère, is portrayed through a particular method: recorded in a single fixed 20-second shot, the 127 streets and 17 public squares are featured in alphabetical order. This is how notable director Gérard Courant depicts his childhood town in A travers l’univers, which will be screened today, Sunday (please check times and venue).

THE RURAL EUROPE 21 April 2012

LA EUROPA RURAL

This is a film about the rural Europe, which is hardly seen on postcards or visited by enthusiastic tourists. A film that captures unique images and stories from a millennial cultural event: the annual cow (not bull) fighting competition held in Aproz, a town in southern Switzerland. In this particular scenario, Battle of the Queens shows us a roster of very particular characters: a farmer eager to win with his “contender,” a neurotic reporter just arrived from Zurich and a teen gang looking for some fun.

THE TOWER OF BABEL 21 April 2012

LA TORRE DE BABEL

The footage of the remodeling of Madrid’s famous building resulted in the documentary Edificio España, by Spanish director Víctor Moreno. "For more than a year, I followed the emptying of the building,” expressed the filmmaker. "And I came across an immense Tower of Babel – workers of different nationalities coexisting with the memory of such an iconic place, a symbol of prosperity after Civil War. From the combination of everyday work and remembrance, I forged a film that works as a puzzle, where each piece makes up the portrait of a unique period of our history,” he added.

PORTUGAL IN PERSPECTIVE 20 April 2012

PORTUGAL EN PERSPECTIVA

The documentary Fantasía lusitana shows the reality of Portugal during World War I, under the administration of Oliveira Salazar, who kept his regime neutral in the conflict (as a policy of the so-called “Estado novo”). Produced by João Trabulo, the film by Joao Canijo is an assemblage of official “Estado Novo” propaganda footage, from newscasts that preceded film sessions and rare images of some of the most notable European refugees that stayed in Lisbon during the 1940s. The documentary will be screened today (please check the venue and times), and there are tickets available at the Festival’s outlets and on this website.

A SOLID OPTION 20 April 2012

UNA OPCIÓN DE HIERRO

Combining documentary and fictional footage, the film strives to show the everyday life of a group of Brazilian women who live in rural areas and can hardly choose between sugar-cane harvesting or prostitution to make their living. This is the scenario of A opçao (Ou: as rosas da estrada ), by director Ozualdo R. Candeias, included in the Focus dedicated to productions made in Sao Paulo’s district Boca do Lixo. The film will be screened today, Friday, and there are tickets available for purchase at the Festival’s ticket outlets (find more information in the “Tickets” section) or on this website.
