fr Renaud Garcia-Fons 's biography

Renaud Garcia-Fons

The talented double-bass player Renaud Garcia-Fons was born in Paris in 1962. Although he was educated in the classical school, he was interested in languages that included improvisation. He added a fifth string to his instrument to develop his potential as a soloist. His participation in two formations directed by Claude Barthélémy, the Orchestre de Contrebasses and the Orchestre National de Jazz, opened the doors of jazz to him. Especially interested in flamenco expression, he performed with Pedro Soler (Suite Andalouse), Vicente Pradal, Carmen Linares, Gerardo Núñez and Jazz Spania. His dedication to the strengthening of flamenco did not restrain him from exploring music from other cultures. This way, he played with Angélique Ionatos (Greece), Cheb Mami (Algeria), Dhafer Youssef (Tunisia), Huong Tanh and Nguyen Le (Vietnam), Kudsi Erguner (Turkey). He currently collaborates with Matthias Winckelmann, producer and founder of the German label Enja Records, with which he has recorded several albums.
He leads several groups: the Oriental Bass Band, the quintet Navigatore, the trios Entremundo and Arcoluz and his current project La línea del sur, which he will present in Buenos Aires Jazz. He travels the world’s festivals with this bands and he also records for several labels. He is the creator of World Chamber Music, a piece for a string quartet –the Quatuor Renoir–, a double-bass, a bansuri and a riq.
