Rousseau is remembering Manon, a young servant girl he loved, long ago, when he was a lackey in a noble family. He had stolen a piece of ribbon and offered it to her but when the theft was discovered he unashamedly accused her, sending her away to live in poverty. His Confessions were born from this nagging remorse.
