Synopsis
There aren’t many secrets behind the title of this documentary: Damo Suzuki, singer of the legendary German kraut band Can, visited Argentina in June 2009 to give a concert next to a handful of local musicians led by Alan Courtis. Following that logic of somewhat estranged transparency, the film goes along Damo through Buenos Aires –from his arrival at Ezeiza airport to the musicians’ sent-off after the show– through a direct and yet expressive treatment backed by the multiple and careful images of Guillermo Ueno, Sergio Subero, Ignacio Iasparra and Pablo Mazzolo. From video to Super 8, and from concert footage to free images inspired by the music, Alter Sapukai! Damo Suzuki en Argentina stands on a split structure that never obstructs the film’s narration, and instead seems to accent the fragmentary spirit of the soundtrack while also exploring new paths in the usually pre-digested rockumentary form.
