Synopsis
Herens –or Eringen– is the name of a kind of cow that only exists in the Wallis canton in Southern Switzerland. They’re the last survivors of a race that inhabited the Alps region five thousand years ago, and is one of the few that still maintain the reflex of defining their place in the social hierarchy by fighting each other. That instinct, for which the Herens’ long pointy horns are great for, has been traditionally used by farmers to organize a particular festival: the Aproz “Battle of the Queens”. Every spring, thousands of people come to the town and witness a wild, majestic show of rushes, bellowing, and exploiting muscles. A neurotic journalist from Zurich, a group of scooter-riding teenagers who try to get the attention of the young caretaker of the cow Melancholia, and an anxious, ultra-prepared farmer: these are three of the many stories that take place in Aproz and are here featured in black & white, as Battle of the Queens manages to capture not only the charm of a unique tradition, but also the strange ways in which men and animals relate to each other.
