Synopsis
A summer night, a small town lost in the Pyrenees, and an annual celebration. Multiple and surprising encounters. Lheureux crosses the abundant imagery of European fairy tales with a documentary recording of a scene where animals walk freely while kids, teenagers, and adults celebrate together. For example, there’s little Martylle, who is taken to sleep by her father. During the night, a wild boar wakes her up and invites her to a walk through the woods, during which she finds animal paintings drawn by prehistoric men inside a cave. Beneath that and other extraordinary encounters lies the sensation that nothing ever dies, and that everything is present and can revive with just a little imagination. And the feeling that time is nothing but a modern invention. And then there’s the chiaroscuro. On every fragment of the frame (the shot, the canvas, and the stone) there’s the sensual and infinite correspondence of light and shadow. Is clarity created by adding light or white painting, or it is rather made by removing layers and scratching dark surfaces?
