Synopsis
Learning how to be a shaman is a centuries old tradition, which Herlinda Agustín-Fernández learned from her parents and grandparents. She is part of the Shipibo-Conibo community located in the Peruvian Amazonas, a place that struggles for the survival of its heritage from one generation to the next. Throughout the movie we get to meet the Herlinda beyond her shaman side: the daughter, the mother, the Shipiba woman. Once she is diagnosed with cervical cancer, all of her knowledge begin to intercross with the kind of medicine that is practiced in hospitals. While she visits doctors Herlinda also practices her preparations with medicinal plants and songs (or ícaros). She heals others and hopes to get cured from that disease that affects so many other women that live with her. Through her story we can see the tradition clash between these native communities and the modern world that surrounds them, and through it, the importance of keeping our ancestors’ legacy alive.
