Synopsis
A moving autobiographical essay in which travels are meant to complete the story of the Beckermann’s parents and their nomadic youth as History took them from one place to the other. She goes first to the Bukowina region where her father was born, a place formerly part of the Austrian/Hungarian Empire. She finds Ceausescu’s Romania, where Jews are scarce. In Yugoslavia, there’s a moment of post-modern masochism: a film set where Jewish extras play their ancestors in the ghetto. Back in Vienna, her mother tells her how she ended up in the city she swore never to set foot again. Former Wehrmacht officer Kurt Waldheim’s presidential election brings up the anti-Semitic spirit of Mitteleuropa, stirred up by Hitler and still latently present. The Holocaust keeps coming up in testimonies and conversations, running through a generation and rising up before the next one as an unavoidable shadow.
