Daniel Lencina

Born in 1938 in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, he took his first steps as a trumpeter in 1958, at the age of 20, and has ever since developed an outstanding career throughout the continent. He has been living in Chile for over thirty years, where his work has become an indispensable reference in the jazz scene of this part of the world. According to the web site musicapopular.cl, “if there has ever been a jazz musician to reach the category of ‘pop star’, that’s Lencina. Since 1972 he has not only positioned himself as one of the most consolidated improvisers, but has also gone beyond to get into the typical national family with his 25 years in front of the television cameras. He is less of a jazz player than he is a real showman”.

His career in the Chilean television is vast: he performed in all-star TV programmes like Tiempo de Swing and El Teléfono, and his popularity remained at a peak for 22 years due to Sábados Gigantes. Lencina performed alongside big names of the genre including Joe Lovano, Wynton Marsalis, Elvin Jones, Ralph Lalama, Renato Chico, Patrick O’Leary and many more, in concerts and jam sessions.

Only in 2001 did he release his first album, Siempre. At present, being 70 and in perfectly good shape, he leads his own quartet.
