John Hebert

The long list of artists that John Hebert has collaborated with includes Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, David Liebman, Uri Caine, Greg Osby, Bill Stewart, Marc Copland, Fred Hersch, Maria Schneider, among others. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he took double bass classes with Bill Huntington and graduated from Loyola University after receiving a scholarship. Already in New York, he finishes his studies with Rufus Reid at the William Paterson University.
Byzantine Monkey is the name of his band. Jazz critics from the Downbeat magazine mention him in their 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions as “a rising star of the acoustic bass”. From 2001 to 2007, he worked with Andrew Hill in numerous ensembles and participated in Time Lines, the last album that this great pianist made for Blue Note, a recording that was distinguished as Album of the Year by the Downbeat critics in 2006. Hebert participated in the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tampere Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Moers Jazz Festival, Ear Shot Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, among many other international jazz festivals. However, it is also usual to see him playing at the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, Birdland and Iridium, the most prestigious jazz bars in New York.
