Synopsis
Delia (Andreea Bosneag) is a chubby teenage girl who just won a car in a contest. She travels to Bucharest with her parents to receive the award and participate in an ad for the brand of juice that sponsored everything. The trip ends up in a square where the advertising agency is setting up for the shoot; she will spend a long afternoon there, trying to repeat her lines and please the crew. But the whole thing has sprung a series of internal tensions in the family’s life, which start to surface amidst the nerves of the occasion. A multi-awarded short film director who also works as an assistant director in The Death of Mister Lazarescu, Radu Jude uses a laconic but precise script to show the rampant pathetic climate that surrounds Delia and her dreams. The differences between the country and the city, between the eldest practical spirit and the illusions of the youngest, and the professionals’ low tolerance towards the amateurs, all turn The Happiest Girl in the World into a really ironic title.
