Synopsis
Despite the very tight bond that exists between Buenos Aires and cine-ma, the film incursions that place the city at the center of their plots are rather scarce. The documentary sub-genre known as “symphony” –which tries to capture the essence and rhythm of some metropolis (like, for example, Walter Ruttmann’s Berlin: Symphony of a Great City, or Jean Vigo’s À propos de Nice)– has unfinished business with the city that Juan de Garay founded in 1580. The events in this film take place a few meters away from the Obelisk, in an area that covers just a few blocks. The city’s downtown is the place where thousands of people rush by every day; and where lots of signs advertise a variety of services and products while subway lines silently run beneath it. It’s also a place where the evangelists, the Chinese, the teenagers, the arbolitos (those who buy and sell dollars illegally), the businessmen… they all inject the surroundings with a unique energy that this film conveys through every shot and every sound, which are registered and arranged following the same musical logic of a concerto, where every instrument plays its part with complete control of its abilities.
