Synopsis
Original title: Lifadiande nüer
Focusing on the everyday relationship between a hair-dressing mom and her only daughter, the films portrays a very small universe where a relaxed existence features imperceptible variations, and time seems to barely modify the everyday quietness. However, Charlotte Lim’s eye tenses everything, and links every space, moment, and gesture to form a net of images and sounds that pushes to the extreme the potential of a contemplative, describing cinema subtly turned into storytelling; and she manages to make a narration that’s fragmented to the point of incoherence never lose its emotional strength. Loneliness, banality, tenderness and the abrupt, all mix up together in a slow movement –almost as if they had the same specific gravity– in this Malaysian first film that inherits a certain trend in Asian cinema, and yet ends up defining a mise en scène that follows both radical and personal principles.
