Concerts

top International Concerts

The BAJ.11 maintains its commitment to inviting top-notch international artists who have never performed in the City. The concert series opens with notable pianist Kenny Werner, whose style straddles the line between traditional and contemporary jazz. Werner will perform both solo and with his legendary trio. The BAJ will close with a magnificent double-bill featuring two leaders of the European avant-garde: Danish percussionist Marilyn Mazur’s quartet and the Saiyuki project led by French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê. We will welcome two acclaimed trumpeters: the legendary Charles Tolliver and Paolo Fresu, a leading name in European avant-garde. Other concerts will feature notable Norwegian double bass player Arild Andersen and two excellent pianists, the Spanish Albert Bover and the French Baptiste Trotignon. As in previous editions, Brazil will be present, on this occasion with mandolin virtuoso Hamilton de Holanda and singer Tatiana Parra, one of Sao Paulo’s new voices.

top Crossovers

This series has become a true hallmark of the Festival. Local and guest musicians come together to share the stage and perform with no safety net other than their own talent, audacity and generosity. These are catalytic encounters, which forge new lasting artistic relationships. The audience becomes a witness to, and judge of, a very unique show that is not easy to find in other parts of the world. This year, we have increased the number of stages for these crossovers. In addition to Notorious and Café Vinilo – which will open their doors like in previous editions of the Festival Internacional Buenos Aires Jazz – several venues of the City are also willing to bear witness to the new music springing from this celebration of diversity, which features musicians of the most diverse nationalities and backgrounds.

top Special Projects

The Trastienda Club, the Festival’s traditional venue, is the designated place to showcase the special projects and commissions involving a variety of Argentine musicians, during this edition of the BAJ. Some of the events include live performances of new albums – by trumpeter Mariano Loiácono and drummer Hernán Mandelman – and the Concert by the Colectivo Ensamble Real Book Argentina – a project led by Esteban Sehinkman to encourage the exchange of local music between its musicians. Also, trumpeter Juan Cruz de Urquiza will present his work based on Charly García’s music – commissioned by the artistic direction of the Festival Internacional Buenos Aires Jazz. And the Manuel de Falla Conservatory’s Big Band will not only perform the music by the legendary Charles Tolliver, but they will do it under his direction.

top Outdoors - Terraza

Sunset on a spring evening outdoors – on the Terraza and the beautiful Patio del Aljibe of the Centro Cultural Recoleta, the Festival offers the most diverse and attractive program of jazz concerts. How could you possibly resist? This year, the already irresistible program will feature Ernesto Jodos Doble Trío and the Inmigrantes Big Band, performing their new albums on the stage of the Terraza. The lineup also includes several international artists, such as singer Akiko Pavolka, French saxophonist Sylvain Del Campo and the Colombian group Suricato. Among national musicians, Argentos will present their work based on the music of Alberto Ginastera.

top Unplugged

The BAJ.11 provides a very special venue for this year: La Capilla of the Centro Cultural Recoleta. The chapel, with its supreme acoustics and intimate atmosphere, boasts an apse for performances that need no microphones, no loudspeakers, no electricity. These are unique all-acoustic concerts featuring piano or guitar solos, duos, trios and quartets, with nothing between the instrument’s own sound and the audience’s ear.

top Jazzology

For 27 consecutive years, the Jazzology series, directed by Carlos Inzillo, has been showcasing musicians devoted to popular genres, especially jazz, every Tuesday at an auditorium of the Centro Cultural San Martín. The program of concerts curated by Inzillo brings a wide variety of artists to the stage: from traditional-jazz performers to the most innovative ones, from young talents to legendary figures from the local and international scene. They have all performed in this highly popular free concert series. The Jazzology stage is a vital element in the cultural life of the City. For this reason, it has been a highlight of the Festival Internacional Buenos Aires Jazz since its first edition.

top The Jam

Everybody knows that when the workday is over, La Trastienda Club provides a laid-back gathering place to spend the rest of the day. Jazz artists and enthusiasts come together for the ritual of the jam session – a real tradition of the genre that combines music, food and socializing. Hosted by a first-class master of ceremonies, Gillespi, with whom swing and good vibes are guaranteed. Accompanied by his new band, he will welcome local and international guests in the mood for some jamming, on the nights of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
